Carbon Capture and Storage is an application that prevents the release of the greenhouse gas Carbon Dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere as a result of burning of fossil fuels, or other industrial processes such as oil refining, cement production, and steel production. CO2 is typically captured using chemical processes, then stored permanently; typically in underground deep geological formations. In addition to storage, the potential utilization of CO2 in Enhanced Oil Recovery (CO2-EOR) has become a subject of particular official interest in GCC countries in recent years. As major oil producing nations; experience with Oil and Gas processing provides good ground for CO2 sequestration application in terms of technology and knowledge base, public acceptance, and risk management.
The UAE has announced plans for an ambitious large scale CCS project through Abu Dhabi’s MASDAR initiative, which would capture approximately 6 MTPA upon completion; primarily intended for EOR application.
Saudi Arabia has also launched the planning phase for a large scale CO2-EOR pilot in its largest oilfield.
There are several active initiatives on R&D and technology development in the field of CCS, such as those by MASDAR Institute of Science and Technology, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), and Qatar Science and Technology Park.
